LSI Logic Delivers Industry's First Single-Chip DVD Recorder System Processor
Based Upon LSI Logic's DoMiNo(TM) Architecture, the Industry's Most Integrated Solution Provides Manufacturers of DVD Recorders the Highest Level Of System Features and Image Quality
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI - news) today
introduced the first single-chip DVD recorder system processor, the
DiMeNsion(TM)-8600 (DMN-8600). The DMN-8600 is the first device in LSI Logic's
DiMeNsion family of consumer recordable products and is based upon the
company's powerful system-on-a-chip DoMiNo(TM) architecture. The new processor
supports all DVD recording and playback formats and enables feature-rich DVD
recorder solutions, while significantly reducing system-level costs and design
complexity for consumer electronics manufacturers. The new solution will be
demonstrated this week at the International Consumer Electronics Show at
LSI Logic's booth #870.
"The DiMeNsion 8600's high level of integration and compelling set of
features will help bring DVD recorders to the mass market," said
Shingo Kawata, associate director of the Home AV Network Business Unit of
JVC Corporation. "LSI Logic's DoMiNo architecture represents a new level of
performance for consumer digital entertainment solutions."
Lowering total system cost and improving performance, the DMN-8600
integrates digital audio and video encode and decode capabilities; dual
high-performance 32-bit RISC processors; highest-quality display processing
abilities; storage and IEEE-1394 interfaces; and a 2D graphics engine. Its
32-bit SPARC RISC CPUs have DSP co-processing engines that provide up to a
combined 600 MIPS of performance. In addition, the DMN-8600 integrates a
high-performance video DSP and motion-estimation engine that, in tandem with
the dual-CPUs, enable simultaneous digital audio and video encode and decode
functions, and provide full-system CPU capabilities. Due to its
high-performance architecture, the processor also has the ability to transcode
between a variety of digital audio and video formats (MPEG, DV) and transrate
between different bit rates. This gives DVD recorder manufacturers the
flexibility to provide a wide variety of system features for consumers.
Michelle Abraham, senior analyst of electronics market research firm
Cahners In-Stat (Scottsdale, AZ) said, "The DVD recorder market is expected to
approach three million units in 2003. A single-chip processor such as the
DiMeNsion-8600 provides the industry an affordable solution that will allow a
new wave of DVD recorders to be offered at very attractive prices in time for
Christmas of 2002."
With LSI Logic's proprietary TrueScan Pro(TM) motion-compensated
de-interlacing and TrueView Pro(TM) motion-compensated temporal filtering
algorithms, the DMN-8600 delivers the industry's best recorded image quality
and highest quality progressive scan display. Together, these capabilities
enable the DMN-8600 to offer a near broadcast quality recording experience in
the living room.
The DMN-8600 utilizes LSI Logic's C-Ware(TM) software architecture which
allows manufacturers to take products to market quickly with commercially
available development tools, while enabling software re-use across and between
other LSI Logic based consumer products such as the ZiVA-5(TM) DVD system
processor. Manufacturers using DMN-8600 are able to offer products ranging
from entry-level DVD recorders to feature-rich products that include DV
camcorder connectivity and digital video recording (DVR) time-shifting
functions on the DVD drive.
Price/Availability
The DMN-8600 is provided in a single 308-pin BGA package and is priced at
$30.00 in high volume. Samples are available now with production quantities
available in the second quarter of 2002.
